Neck Pain Relief
Manual therapy, posture correction, and strengthening for neck pain, stiffness, and whiplash.
From the blog: The Headache That Starts in Your Neck
Most neck pain, including a stiff neck, a pinched nerve and pain that spreads into the shoulder, is treated well with one-on-one physical therapy: hands-on work to free the stiff joints, strengthening for the deep neck muscles, and changes to how you sit, sleep and work. At our North Palm Beach clinic that treatment usually starts at your first visit.
Whether it crept in from years at a desk or arrived overnight after an accident, neck pain responds remarkably well to skilled physical therapy. We identify the joints, muscles, and postural patterns driving your symptoms and treat them directly.
Conditions we treat
- Chronic neck pain and stiffness
- Whiplash-associated disorders
- Cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerve)
- Tension and postural neck pain
- Degenerative changes of the cervical spine
- Pain radiating to the shoulder or arm
Our approach
Care usually combines gentle manual therapy and joint mobilization, deep neck flexor and postural strengthening, and workstation or sleep-position coaching. Most patients notice meaningful change within the first few weeks of consistent care.
What to expect at your first visit
Your first appointment includes a comprehensive movement-based evaluation, an honest conversation about your goals, and a proposed plan of care — including hands-on treatment that very first day whenever appropriate. We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicare, and our front desk will gladly verify your coverage before you arrive.
Neck pain questions, answered
These are the questions people in North Palm Beach ask us most about neck pain, answered the way we would answer them at the front desk. Your own answers come from your evaluation.
Why does my neck get so stiff?
Usually it is sustained position. Hours on a phone, a workday hunched toward a screen or a long drive with your head pushed forward ask the small joints at the top of the spine to hold a load all day. They stiffen, the muscles around them guard, and the neck feels locked, often worst first thing in the morning or at the end of a workday. Treatment frees the stiff joints with gentle manual therapy, then works on the posture and strength that let the stiffness come back.
What is a pinched nerve in the neck, and can therapy help?
Clinicians call it cervical radiculopathy: an irritated nerve root in the neck that can send pain, tingling or numbness into the shoulder, arm or hand. It is one of the conditions our neck program treats. Care follows the same pattern as the rest of the program: gentle manual therapy and joint mobilization, strengthening for the deep neck and upper back muscles, and changes to the positions you spend your day in. If arm weakness is getting worse rather than better, a physician should see it first, and we will tell you so.
Why do my neck and shoulder hurt at the same time?
The muscles that run from your shoulders up into the back of your head are shared territory, so neck pain often spreads into the shoulder or arm. Sometimes the shoulder is the real problem and the neck is compensating. The evaluation tests the neck and the shoulder separately to sort out which is driving the pain, and the plan treats that one. If it turns out to be the shoulder, see our shoulder pain treatment page.
Can my headaches come from my neck?
Often, yes. Many stubborn, recurring headaches start in the stiff joints and tight muscles of the upper neck rather than in the head itself. When the neck is the driver, treating it can reduce how often the headaches come and how hard they hit. Read The Headache That Starts in Your Neck, or see headache treatment.
What happens at my first visit?
Plan on about an hour, one-on-one with your therapist. We take your history, watch how your neck moves, and measure motion, strength and the positions that bring the pain on. Treatment usually begins the same day, often with gentle hands-on work and the first one or two exercises of your home program. You leave knowing what is going on and what to do between visits. The first visit page has the details.
Which exercises will I do at home?
That depends on your evaluation, but most neck programs work the deep neck flexors and the upper back. Scapular retractions and shoulder shrugs, three sets of ten, are two that Dr. Dave Kashuba, Ph.D., OTR, gives patients often, because they work against the rounded, forward posture daily life builds in. Both are on our home exercises page with instructions. Start them after your evaluation, not instead of it.
How long until my neck feels better?
Most patients notice meaningful change within the first few weeks of consistent care. How many visits you need depends on what is driving the pain, how long you have had it and what you want to get back to. After your evaluation your therapist proposes a visit frequency and honest milestones, then adjusts the plan to how you actually respond.
When should a doctor check my neck first?
Neck pain after a significant fall, blow to the head or car accident should be checked by a physician before therapy. So should neck pain that comes with fever, or with weakness or numbness in an arm or leg that is getting worse. Ruling out the serious causes is what makes it safe to treat the mechanical side with confidence. After a car accident, also read our car accident rehab page for Florida's 14-day rule.
Do I need a referral, and will insurance cover it?
In most cases Florida's direct access law lets you begin a physical therapy evaluation without a physician referral. Some plans still require one for coverage, and Medicare requires a physician to certify your plan of care. Before your first visit our front desk verifies your Medicare or commercial benefits and tells you what your plan needs. Our 2026 Medicare guide explains deductibles and coinsurance.
