Radiologist and co-founder of Palm Beach Radiology, now TGH Imaging · North Palm Beach, FL
On the show
“Our job is to find it as small and early as possible, because the smaller the lesion, the earlier the stage, the better the prognosis.”
Dr. Don Goodwin, a radiologist Dave says has been reading images for more than 50 years, opened Breast Cancer Awareness Month by walking through when screening should start and how often. He sides with annual mammograms from age 40, explains why dense breast tissue can hide small cancers and how ultrasound and MRI add detection, and puts the radiation from a 3D mammogram at about 0.4 millisieverts, roughly one flight across the country. He also reminded listeners that men get breast cancer too.

What Your Mammogram Can Miss
Dr. Donald Goodwin, MD
Radiologist Dr. Don Goodwin has read breast imaging for more than 50 years. He explains why most medical societies still say screen every year from 40, why dense breasts can hide up to 60% of cancers under 10mm on a mammogram, and when ultrasound or MRI should be added.
